On December 1, 2012, Kazerne Dossin opened in Mechelen, a Museum, Memorial, and Documentation Center about the Holocaust and Human Rights. Kazerne Dossin is a unique place of remembrance for Belgium. As an SS collection camp, Mechelen was literally a waiting room for death for more than 25,000 Belgian and Northern French Jews and Roma during World War II. To illustrate the historical significance of this site for current and future generations and to make themes like racism, exclusion, and human rights tangible, a brand new museum was built. The combination of the historical narrative of the Holocaust in Belgium with the theme of human rights makes Kazerne Dossin a unique project. The design is by leading architect Bob van Reeth.
