The tree is located on the former motte of Wijgmaal, an island between two arms of the Dijle River, where in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century the watermill and the first starch factory of Eduard Remy were situated. These buildings have been demolished, one arm of the Dijle has been filled in, and a football field and the sports center Ymeria are now located there. Due to its size, the plane tree is an important landmark in the surrounding area. It is a bundle tree, formed by the merging of (presumably six) different trees that were planted in the same planting hole; this is a method to quickly obtain thick trees.
