It was long believed that the freedom tree of Morkhoven was planted during the Brabant Revolution (1789-1791). The tree that was planted at that time disappeared during the tumultuous times that followed. The tree was most likely replaced by a new freedom tree in response to Belgian independence. A specialized dendrochronological analysis shows that the planting date of the mature Dutch lime tree is around 1830.
