The Thick Oak is located at the beginning of the Thick Oak Drive, at the intersection with Chancellor Drive, a monumental beech avenue, in the Mollendaal Forest. The Thick Oak is the thickest, and presumably also the oldest, tree in the Meerdaal Forest. In 1995, the age of this tree was determined by boring into the trunk. At that time, 320 growth rings were counted. This means that the tree began to grow in the second half of the 17th century.
