This tree must have started growing from an acorn in about the year 1675. It was in that year that the famous Johannes Vermeer, Dutch painter, only 43 years old, died. In that period (17th century) it was quite doom and gloom here in the Southern Netherlands. This area experienced a succession of wars, destruction, sieges, looting and blockades. Squeezed between the superpowers, the area is at the mercy of warring armies in ever-changing alliances. But that doesn't bother this tree. It continues to grow steadily.
