The Kastanjebos is located north of Veltem-Beisem and connects to the so-called fossil Flemish valley. The soil consists of moderately clayey loamy soils with a hydromorphic grey-brown podzol-like soil that is often very wet during winter and spring, or it is a very silty loamy soils that are permanently wet. On the other hand, in this area we also find alternating moderately and strongly gleyy sandy loam soils, which are respectively also intermittently or permanently wet. In the northern part flows the Lipsebeek, the southern part of the Kastanjebos is very swampy.
