Het Kastanjebos ligt ten noorden van Veltem-Beisem en sluit aan bij de zogenaamde fossiele Vlaamse vallei. De bodem bestaat uit matig gleyige leemgronden met een hydromorfe grijsbruine podzolachtige bodem die vaak tijdens de winter en het voorjaar zeer nat is, ofwel gaat het om sterk gleyige leemgronden die daarentegen permanent nat zijn. Anderzijds vinden we in dit gebied ook afwisselend matig en sterk gleyige zandleemgronden die respectievelijk ook wisselend of permanent nat zijn. In het noordelijk deel stroomt de Lipsebeek, het zuidelijk deel van het Kastanjebos is zeer drassig.
