The Sonian Forest, with an area of approximately 4400 hectares, is the largest and best-preserved relic of the historic Coal Forest, which has been systematically reduced. An extensive pattern of avenues cuts through the forest. The Sonian Forest consists of two sub-areas: the southwestern part of the Sonian Forest between Hoeilaart and Sint-Genesius-Rode and the northeastern part in Tervuren and Kraainem, which also includes the Capuchin Forest, the Marnix Forest and the Tervuren Arboretum.
