Scherpenheuvel is located on a ridge in the northern Hageland between Aarschot and Diest. It is a 'new city', founded by the Archdukes Albert and Isabella, with a star-shaped, heptagonal plan, originally defended by seven bastions and equipped with three city gates on the roads to Zichem, Leuven and Diest.
