This anchorage is located on the southern edge of the Wijnendale plateau and is a remnant of the Lost Cost forest from the 18th century. The landscape here is structured by the relief and the hydrology. The southern slope of the plateau shows several spring levels where sandy tertiary layers outcrop. The streams in the Wijnendale forest all flow into the Kasteelbeek. The Quaternary sandy cover is very thin on this slope. On the plateau itself, there are ridged waterlogged soils. Along the slopes where small depressions allowed, peat could form during the Holocene. The plateau itself is currently under agricultural land but has previously been a marginal field area. In the forest, a checkerboard pattern can be recognized, indicating the late, systematic reclamation of the field area.
