Grandvalbos and Kooigembos

This anchorage is located between the village centres of Kooigem (Kortrijk) and Sint-Denijs (Zwevegem). It is located on a southern spur of the interfluvial ridge between the Scheldt and Lys basins, which starts around Molen Ter klare and continues over Sint-Denijs to the Grandval and Kooigem woods. The ridge has a southeast-northwest orientation with the Sand Brook at the foot of the western slope of the Grandval forest. On the hilltop, clayey and fine sandy material from the Tielt Formation is exposed. Underneath lies the clay of the Kortrijk Formation. The slopes are covered with a quaternary loam layer that thickens the more one goes downhill. At the top zone, clayey material is exposed and there is reservoir water. That is why these lands are difficult to cultivate and remain under forest for a long time. The forests are home to a valuable and rich (spring) flora. South of Kooigembos is a small and isolated coniferous forest. Adjacent to the forest are some meadows; The rest of the slope flanks lie under large arable land plots without field edge vegetation. The Zandbeek flows at the foot of the hill on which the Grandval forest is located. It still has a very natural course and is accentuated in the landscape by accompanying (pollard) rows of trees and thickets. The forests are separated from each other by a very deeply incised dry valley with very clear valley edges. At the edge of the valley, the road runs from Kooigem to Sint-Denijs. At the foot of this hill there are small and narrow roads that follow the orientation of the hill. They have flat verges and sometimes embankments, some of which are overgrown with wooded edges. Chapels are scattered along the roads. Near the roads are the farms. There are hardly any buildings along the top of the hill except for a few smaller buildings along the road from Kooigem to Sint-Denijs.
