The Poaching Forest is located northeast of Stekene. In the early Middle Ages, the Koningsforeest was located here, until the Count of Flanders stimulated the exploitation of this area by abbeys, local lords and private individuals. The oldest known mining dates from 1117, when the parish of Kemzeke (villa Clapdorp) was also created. The present hamlet of Trompe may have been a proto-industrial settlement for peat extraction at this time. The still existing toponym "Maet" also indicates this. The castle Voorhout can also be associated with the exploitation of the Koningsforeest (Voorhout = located in front of a forest).
