The Heverleebos-Meerdaalwoud complex extends south of Leuven from Heverlee to the border with Walloon Brabant. This large forest complex was formerly the property of the Dukes of Arenberg, after the First World War these goods were forfeited and seized. As a result, these vast forest areas came into the possession of the Belgian State. The forest connects to the Arenberg Castle in Heverlee. Archaeological finds from the Neolithic and Roman periods were recorded. It is a 'permanent' forest area of more than 3000 ha with a great diversity of fauna and flora.
