The Bolloheide is a relic (with an area of approximately 13.6 hectares) of the heath and pine forest complex that used to occupy most of the dunes that border the northern edge of the Flemish Valley between Mechelen and Aarschot. Of this dune landscape, sometimes called the Brabantse Kempen, only a few relics remain: the Kruisheide and the Pommelsven in Keerbergen and the Bolloheide in Tremelo, on the eastern spur of the row of dunes. From the interwar period onwards, the other parts of these dunes were converted into extensive residential allotments.
