Farm with loose ingredients De Snippe

Description

Dudzelesteenweg no. 1/ Koolkerkesteenweg. Historic farm so-called "De Snippe", iconic from the Koolkerkesteenweg through the large, prestigious farmhouse. History. Goes back to a medieval estate, a loan from the Burg of Bruges. Historical name of the farm after the first known buyer: in 1359 Michel Snippe sells the property to Jacob van Roeselare. From the 17th century it is well known as "Casteel van de Woude", after the van de Woude family, who had a castle built there in that century, perhaps within an already existing gr.m. quadrangular, late medieval ramparts. The castle is shown on 18th-century maps as a stone building with stepped gables; east outside the moat, a neerhof. In the 18th century, the Bruges Verhouve family stayed on this prestigious estate. On the map of Ferraris (1770-1778) the estate is incorrectly called "Pickevet" (cf. Koolkerkesteenweg no. 78). In the second half of the 18th century or in the beginning of the 19th century these buildings were replaced: the primitive cadastre map of 1834 shows the current configuration of the country house and at right angles to it an elongated stable volume, both within the ramparts with an entrance on the south-eastern side; The old neerhof has disappeared. According to Devliegher, the right-angled barn volume would be dated from 1833. In the 19th century, "De Snippe" was a country residence belonging to Jan Maertens de Diepenhede de Rozendaele, Procureur des Konings in Bruges. In 1882, for the new heir Willem Maertens-De Fooz, lawyer from Bruges, an important change was made to the yard: the moat was filled in on the northeast side for the construction of a barn and a bakehouse, the rear buildings of the manor were changed. In 1886 a renovation was carried out at the southern end of the stable volume: the current head volume was built, cf. dating in facing stone "1886". In 1895 the Dudzelesteenweg was drawn as a connecting road between the Koolkerkesteenweg and the Rondsaartstraat (then called "road from Bruges to Westkapelle"). The driveway to the farm will be moved to this new stone road. In the 1970s, the moats were completely filled in. New pieces are added to the company buildings. In 2005 "De Snippe" is operated as a farm, the house is vacant, the buildings are in neglected condition. Description. Farm with three separate components on a large, underhardened yard: stately country house, right-angled stable wing with parallel barn wing. Remains of the original driveway from the Koolkerkesteenweg, with a beautiful view of the mansion from the Dammesteenweg, accentuated by the red brick fence pillars and two large trees that may mark the entrance to the former upper court. Large country house in sober classicist style, built in the late 18th or early 19th century, probably on the remains of the 17th-century castle "van de Woude", cf. on the ground floor traces of two, probably 17th-century relief arches. Deep double house of five bays and two storeys under tiled truncated tent roof on wooden cornice with bobbins (ridge parallel to Koolkerkesteenweg). White painted brick construction, cemented plinth with a basement opening on the front left. In front and side facades rectangular wall openings, shuttered on the ground floor, with bluestone sills, with 19th-century red painted joinery; Front door with a foot scraper on both sides. Interior consisting of spacious, gr.m. square rooms with very sober finishes; beam layers preserved. Long stable volume to the north-east of the house, the lower, northern part of which was probably built at the same time as the manor house, and the southern part under higher ridge dates from 1886. Dark anchored brick construction under tiled gable roofs (Flemish tiles, ridge perpendicular to house). Oldest part with rectangular wall openings: small windows and shared stable doors, painted red. The younger, higher stable section is built in lighter red brick and has a well-designed gabled façade facing the Koolkerkesteenweg, with two slightly arched gates and a round-arched loading door flanked by two oeil-de-boeuf; dated in the top on facing stone "1886". Ground floor disturbed by newer, rectangular gate. Parallel to the stable wing, a large barn volume with incorporated double wagon house, built in 1882 just outside the then filled moats of the upper court. Yellow anchored brick construction under tiled gable roof. Single cross barn with basket arch gates; wagon house with two lower basket arch gates. All gates bricked up with quick building block. New wall openings cut into gables, new extensions.
