At this bridge on the Laak, we have a bit of trouble discovering Het Schippeke behind the high hedge. This former inn is located on the territory of Werchter. It is no coincidence that there was an inn here. On the road that was the only connection between Tremelo and Werchter, one could cross the Laak here. Actually, we should say "fording", because for centuries no bridge was built here. It was only built at the beginning of the 19th century and was certainly not sufficiently sturdy for carts and carriages. That would not be the case until 1867.
This place was probably also the terminus that riverboats could sail from the Dyle onto the Laak. This is where the 'amer' or berth of Tremelo was located, where wood, bricks and other materials could be unloaded and loaded. Perhaps there was an old 'motte' or fortification on the side of Tremelo.
The bridge and the inn were destroyed during the first days of the First World War and only rebuilt after the war.
