Before the First World War, 't Roggeveld, inn and brewery (see inscription on the postcard). This inn location certainly dates back to 1623: in accounts, the inn "Te Rochevelle" is mentioned among others. It is possible that there was already a brewery at the inn. During the First World War, the inn-brewery served as the German 'Ortskommandatur', while the opposite inn 't Nieuw Roggeveld' (Roeselarestraat) was set up as a medical post and field hospital. Since this area was not destroyed during the war, the municipal college and the city council initially met in this inn after 1918.
