Lot, initially a hamlet divided by the Senne into two on the border of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and Dworp, only became an independent municipality in 1927 and was incorporated into the merged municipality of Beersel in 1977. Its extremely favourable location in the Senne valley, along the Brussels-Charleroi canal (1827-1832) and the Brussels-Mons railway line (1840), meant that industrialisation started at an early stage. When in 1842 the large spinning and weaving mill Scheppers came to settle there, this was the impetus for a strong industrial expansion and a large population increase. Under the impetus of Renaat Van Elslande (1916-1976), former minister and minister of state of the Christian People's Party, who was also mayor of Lot continuously in the period 1946-1976, the municipality experienced an unprecedented prosperity. The crisis in Belgian industry in the 1970s marked the end of Lot as an industrial centre.
