Chateau located in park and forest

Description

Bollestraat no. 25. Chateau located in park and forest, from the period 1895-1906. So-called "Villa Roger" (cf. literature, naming after the client) or "HUYS TE VELDE" cf. cartouche above the entrance portal. In 1895 a first volume (so-called "Pleasure House and Pleasure Garden") was built by O. Roger-Bruneel, merchant from Ostend cf. land registry data. A number of plots between the Bollestraat and the Bruges-Kortrijk railway line to the west of it were united and a 'house with orchard', already owned by the merchant, was demolished. In 1897 and 1906 (minor modification) the building was extended by the same client, cf. year stone with the inscription "'T JAER 1905" in cartouche above the loggia at the rear. Park and woodland, enclosed by mixed hedge. Ornate wooden entrance gate, on the far left of the plot, garage from the first quarter of the 20th century. Red brick construction rising in spout gable, basket-arched door. Park with lime trees (front), red and green beech, horse chestnut, oak, elm, hawthorn, acacia, weeping willow by pond. A drainage stream runs across the domain. Behind it is a piece of forest with old poplar and birch, typical forest plants. Volume of country house built in two construction phases. A first phase of construction (ca. 1895) in red brick with mullioned friezes, set under a gable roof (stepped gable) and with a projecting square corner volume, was supplemented around 1897 by a larger yellow brick volume with bands of simili stone, under slate hipped and gable roofs (climbing dormers and at the portal risalite, dormer under gable roof with elaborate windboard). The older corner volume is erected with a versatile turret under a slate spire. Arched, rectangular and round-arched wall openings, in the 1897 volume with chamfered reveals. Portal and staircase hall with loggia portal with columns. Above the cartouche with the house name, large round-arched window (stair light) with six-part cross division. Preserved green-painted woodwork, T-shaped windows and narrow windows, small rod divisions in the fanlights, among other things. On the ground floor, partly latticework. The old part was originally finished with shutters (cf. old photo). Façade with park view: stepped gable with angled fial, in the façade field convex frame under relieving arch. Tripartite, round-arched loggia with columns, above it annual cartouche. Interior: quite simple with preserved floors (square tiles), painted interior carpentry of doors and landing staircase with round bars. Preserved hinges and locks of the woodwork, interior shutters. Simple marble fireplaces. LAND REGISTRY ARCHIVES WEST FLANDERS, 207: Mutation sketches, Torhout, 1895/8, 1897/17, 1906/27. BRUNO, Torhout around 1900, Torhout, 1985, p. 229.
