This monument was erected in 1919 as a tribute to the veterans of the First World War. The forty-eight names of the soldiers from Groot-Bijgaarden were engraved in the column. Two casualties are also mentioned: Henri Place and Petrus Bayens. A third casualty, Jozef Mertens, is not mentioned. He was killed on 29 September 1914 in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, during the attack on the Antwerp fortifications. But he had been reported missing. It was only later, when this column had already been made, that his death became known. The three fallen soldiers were each given a street named after them in Groot-Bijgaarden.
