This chapel stands at an altitude of 80m above sea level. Its foundation is closely related to the battle that was fought in the year 1333 on the hamlet of t' Nelleken between Flemings and Brabants. The Flemings were defeated and a Flemish knight hid in the wooded hill of Saffelberg. In exchange for a safe homecoming, he promised to build a Lady Chapel. This old chapel was replaced by the current one in 1880. It is a well-known regional pilgrimage chapel. Until the Second World War, many Marian worshippers came to pray the rosary at the chapel on Sunday afternoons. The annual parish pilgrimage during the month of May dates back to the year 1941.
