Located in the north of the district and belonging to an extension of the forward fortification line of the Brialmont fortress (1860-1865) to defend Antwerp. Even before the completion of the fortification belt with eight forts, it appeared that the planned inundation area was insufficient to defend the northern port expansion. In 1868 it was decided to build a stone fort on the higher "Merksems plateau" to fill the gap. Construction began in 1871 and, although the keystone above the entrance indicates the year 1876, the works were not completed until 1882.
