Boys' school

In the 15th century, the "Schuttershof" stood here, replaced in 1854 by a school building for 250 students, designed by Ferdinand Berckmans. Enlarged with a teachers' residence in 1862. A third classroom was opened in 1875 but the school remained too small. Approval for the expansion of the school with a library, gymnasium, and school museum was already granted by the municipal administration in 1881, but only in July 1883 were the works put out to tender. Completed in July 1884. Experienced steady growth in the second half of the 20th century with the construction of classrooms on Nieuwstraat around 1965-1970; construction of classrooms and lavatory on Schoolstraat in 1980-1981 designed by M. Cornelis. The last expansion took place in 1981-1982 designed by M. Cornelis with the demolition of the former teachers' residence on Molenstraat and the construction of a wing with classrooms and caretaker's residence at the corner of Molen- and Nieuwstraat.
