Here is the District of Three-Egyptians. The inhabitants here speak of 't Zjiept. Here there was already a shelter since the 17th century that formed a resting place for travellers between Brussels and Geraardsbergen. But before that, there was an older building here that offered a day to pilgrims who came to the nearby Desert Chapel . According to tradition, three gypsy women or "zjiepenessen" also operated the shelter and thus gave their name to this neighborhood. But they would also have been little weasels like gnomes or fairies who stayed at the inn and helped people in the neighborhood with household chores.
There would also be a less fanciful explanation for this name of the neighborhood. Three Egyptians would refer to three gullies or side pins not far from here.
