The Fort of Lier, in the Belgian province of Antwerp, is part of the Antwerp Defense Line. The decision to establish the Antwerp Defense Line was made with the choice of Antwerp as the National Redoubt in 1859. The idea behind this was that Antwerp was most suitable as the last stronghold until help from allies could arrive. The National Redoubt would consist of 1) a siege wall, 2) a belt of forts, and 3) inundations. The belt of forts would comprise about eight Brialmont forts in an 18 km long belt from Wijnegem to Hoboken.
