Description

Former "Flandria Palace Hotel", now offices of the N.M.B.S., built as a hotel with 600 rooms for the world exhibition of 1913, designed in 1912 by architect J. Van den Hende. Monumental corner complex bounded by Prinses Clementinalaan, Koningin Maria Hendrikaplein, and Koningin Astridlaan. The still existing main building was constructed with durable materials, while the wings on the bounding streets were built with temporary materials like the buildings of the world exhibition itself. They were demolished shortly thereafter, and the grounds were subdivided around 1925. Main building in "Beaux-Arts" tradition mixed with stylized motifs with late art nouveau reminiscences. Eleven-bay wide facade with four floors under a slate roof featuring dormer windows. Emphasized semi-circular corner towers topped with domes. Pink-tinted, cemented cladding, horizontally marked by a surrounding floral band and the balconies of the bel étage. The upper floor, oriented more vertically, features alternating narrow bays with square windows with water grooves and wide risalites with framed door windows and separate balcony railings. Surrounding wide floral frieze beneath the projecting cornice with dentil molding on brackets, letters "F P" on the corner towers. Ample ground floor windows between pilasters; central arched entrance provided with a double driveway and wide landing. Corner towers with cross-shaped bay windows extending over two floors and topped with a balcony. Similar side facades of thirteen bays, on the Prinses Clementinalaan with prominent basement (initially with terrace?). DRÈZE G. 1912: Gand-Exposition: Official Organ of the Universelle et Internationale de Gand in 1913, Ghent, 112.
