Former so-called "Castle De Smet." Townhouse in late Empire style set in a strongly reduced surrounding garden: originally extended to Crevestraat (to the east), the Market Square (to the north), and Kerchovestraat (to the west), where part can be found in the rectory garden. The garden was previously closed off from Damstraat by a high and beautiful iron gate. Rectangular double house of two stories and five bays under a hipped roof (tiles, ridge parallel to the street), built around 1852 by the Ghent manufacturer De Smet. Plastered and painted facade with a decorative band. Rectangular ground floor windows with shutters and hardstone drip sill. Arched upper windows on a surrounding string course, with profiled architraves on imposts and preserved typical woodwork. Rectangular door accented by the hardstone frame on the leaves, topped by a straight cornice on scroll consoles decorated with shell motifs. Surrounding main entablature with a paneled architrave and notched wooden cornice on brackets; applied palmettes with central Hermes heads on the whitewashed frieze of the entablature. 20th-century annexes with flat roofs against the rear facade.
