Along the 15,166 km long route of the Ypres-Yser Canal there are 15 kilometer markers. At least four (presumably five) of these, namely mileposts 2, 3, 14 and 15 – (and possibly also milepost 1 that was not found in the overgrown roadside) – are round bluestone poles with the respective figure embossed in a recessed circular field. Kilometer marker 15 shows that these poles are equipped with a profiled base. These four kilometre markers date from before the First World War and were therefore preserved during this war. After all, the part between Ypres and Boezinge with mileposts 2 and 3 was behind the front line and suffered to a lesser extent from the violence of war. The lower navigation of the Ieperlee canal, on the other hand, was part of the front line. However, this was not the case permanently in the area with mileposts 14 and 15.
