Did you know that Marie Curie visited this St. Stanislaus College several times during World War I, which temporarily served as a hospital? Thanks to her intervention, the college received a lot of 25 iron beds and an equal amount of bedding. And because the soldiers were cold, Curie began to knit. Curie displayed enormous perseverance, and she expected the same from her daughter. When Irène was bedridden due to a foot injury, mother Curie wrote: 'I advise you to knit in bed. Learn to knit thick wool and make a soldier’s sweater.' Curie went on missions to the front lines in the Westhoek eleven times. Three of her twenty 'petites Curies', her mobile radiology cars, roamed around Flanders. Curie diagnosed injured soldiers with them, whom she then entrusted to the care of local nurses. Her daughter often accompanied the RX car to develop the X-rays.
