Chapel of Our Lady of Assistance

The chapel of Our Lady of Assistance is located along Weertstraat, near the border between Mariekerke and Bornem, and was established in 1878 by Isabella Teirlinck. History The establishment of a chapel by one person, a family, a neighborhood, or a church institution was once an expression of intense popular devotion. The popular faith directed prayers to the patron saint to obtain a favor or out of gratitude; 'miraculously' found images were attributed miraculous properties. The Our Lady of Assistance chapel was established in 1878 by Isabella Teirlinck and is one of the many Our Lady chapels of Klein-Brabant, known for its devotion to Mary. The neoclassical aspect of the chapel differs from the more common neo-Gothic style of most chapels from the last quarter of the 19th century. Description The chapel of Our Lady of Assistance is a compact rectangular chapel with a low five-sided choir, under an artificial slate gable roof, slightly angled relative to the street. The front gable is marked by pilasters and a simple round-arched door in a flat painted frame. The side walls are equipped with similar windows. An inscription in the floor refers to benefactor Isabella Teirlinck. Protection file DA002107, Chapels Bornem (F.
