Municipal cemetery with war memorial

Description

In 1865, the municipality purchased a first plot of land (13 are 60 centiare) on the Molenkouter southeast of the church for the establishment of a new municipal cemetery outside the village. An old church path, the Molenwegel, ran from the church over the Kerkkouter to the mill and bordered the back of the plot. The cemetery was consecrated on October 4, 1865. In 1895, it was first expanded on the north side with a similar plot, and in 1897 bordered by a yew hedge and provided with a mortuary building in the northwest corner. The entrance was closed off by an iron gate. In 1895, brewers Charles Louis and Clement Callebaut submitted a request to establish a cross "in memory of their dear parents Eugenius Callebaut and Seraphina Singelijn," which they donated to the municipality. The cemetery cross with grave monument was realized around 1905 and is the focal point at the end of the wide path in the new section. In 1935, the cemetery was further expanded, including at the back due to the disappearance of the church path. Here, the cemetery is enclosed by a brick wall. A war memorial is located at the entrance of the cemetery behind a crypt for those who fell in World War II. In 1922, the municipal council decided to erect a memorial for the war victims of World War I. Initially located in the former cemetery on the south side of the church, where it was presumably erected in 1923 or shortly thereafter. In 1948, it was moved to its current location and was solemnly inaugurated on November 11, 1949. War memorial in the form of a tall hard stone pedestal with a bronze statue of a soldier, placed in a square parterre at the entrance of the cemetery surrounded by a green hedge, with a large square hard stone grave slab in front. The bronze statue of a soldier with a raised rifle is signed: "S. Bastin" (sculptor from Wallonia). The pedestal reads at the front: Pro Patria/ 1914-1918/ Wieze/ Remember your people/ in your prayers/ who fought for your freedom/ lost and gone. Cemetery cross with grave monument of the Callebaut family, situated behind a wide path, lined with hard stone grave markers; it forms the center of a round plot with concentric grave markers placed around it. A whitened cast-iron crucifix stands high above a square hard stone grave monument partially designed in foliage and crowned with pseudo-pediments. It is provided on four sides with white marble memorial plates. The whole is placed on a wider pedestal with corner brackets in volute form ending on a plinth. Sarcophagus with inscription plate. Grave monument of the brewing family Van Roy, built in 1948 to a design by engineer architect M. De Stobbeleir (see inscription), constructed from blue hard stone and white stone. Bronze entrance door of the crypt in a rounded building under a dome roof with a crowning cross. Adjacent side wall provided with a cross with a head of Christ behind a kneeling bench. Lower curved side wall on the other side with the names of the family members Van Roy who are buried there. Besides numerous hard stone memorials, there is still one remaining cast-iron grave cross, originally erected in 1951 at the final resting place of Joannes Alexander Pannekoek; in 1998 it was reused for the sisters Van Hove (see text on the cross) at a new location. Decorative openworked cast-iron grave cross with Christ figure in a radiant crown on a skull with crossed bones (of the type Hourant II A 5h).
