Statue of K. L. Ledeganck. The initiative to erect a statue for the Flemish poet Karel Lodewijk Ledeganck (1805-1847) first came from the Antwerp association "Vlaamsche Wacht" in 1889. It was not until 1894 that four municipal council members from Eeklo established a "Ledeganck committee" with the goal of erecting a statue within the city. Through a competition, the execution was awarded in early 1896 to sculptor Jules Lagae from Roeselare and approved by the Royal Commission for Monuments. For the pedestal, the artist enlisted architect Henri Vaerwyck from Ghent. The solemn inauguration took place on August 27, 1897, in the presence of numerous dignitaries and included the performance of the cantata specially composed for the occasion by Peter Benoit.
