The Rectorship of the Free University of Brussels (VUB) is by the famous architect Renaat Braem. Braem completed his architecture studies in 1935 at the academy in Antwerp. That same year, Braem won the Godecharleprijs. He spent the prize money on an internship with the French architect Le Corbusier. Interestingly, Renaat Braem painted the walls of this rectorship for free for 10 years, and most visitors reported that they found those paintings terribly ugly. Moreover, he is the creator of the term "The ugliest country in the world", which was a subtitle of one of his books about urban planning and the lack thereof in Belgium.
