Stalon Street

This very old street bears the name of a commercial sign. The Stalon, which has the same origin as étalon, specifies the foot or the pedestal of a reel. The reason for choosing such an emblem is unknown, but a Walloon expression, beûre a stalon, refers to the act of drinking one glass after another. Was it to encourage its customers? Nonetheless, the success of the business contributed to keeping the name for the street after the 18th century. Between numbers 1 and 3 stands a statue of Nanèsse, the most famous of Liégeois women. Her first name corresponds to the French Agnès. She is a boterèsse, a basket carrier. She typically wears the traditional costume of the hotteuses of Outremeuse. She is the fiancée of Tchantchès. Her character, at least in plays and popular fiction, is the opposite of Tchantchès. She is sensible, courageous, far more thoughtful than her suitor but very jealous. By the way, is it due to a lack of confidence in Tchantchès that her statue stands right next to the Pèkèt house? In any case, she is the one who wears the pants and is the only character allowed to verbally or physically assault Tchantchès, without him retaliating with his côp d’ tièsse èpwèzoné, his poisoned headbutt...
