The Heide district flourished at the end of the 19th century because many city dwellers bought land on which they often built quite luxurious villas. Jewish fellow citizens, often working in the diamond sector in Antwerp, were also attracted by the wooded surroundings and the healthy outdoor air. At the beginning of 1900, almost only Amsterdam Jews lived in Heide.
It was logical that there was a need for a house of worship. The construction was realized in 1928 and in 1929 the synagogue was officially inaugurated. It is the very first rural synagogue in Belgium. Until about 1995, the synagogue was still used for worship in the summer period and the building was in fairly good condition. Plans are in the works to save the synagogue from general decay.
