At the end of the 18th century, only heathland and marshes could be seen here. Around 1800, coniferous wood was planted. In 1955, the de Merode family sold the woods to the S.A. Charbonnages d'Hensies Pommeroeul, which could use the wood as support wood for the mines. Today, the forest is filled with hiking trails and is a popular hiking area for the people of Herenthout.
