At the end of the 18th century, there was only heath and marshland to be seen here. Around 1800, coniferous trees were planted. In 1955, the de Merode family sold the forests to S.A. Charbonnages d'Hensies Pommeroeul, which could make good use of the wood as support timber for the mines. Nowadays, the forest is crisscrossed with walking paths and is a popular walking area for the residents of Herentals.
In the Merode Forests, there are alternating plots of coniferous and deciduous forests. The effects of human activities on the forest are clearly visible. The paths run up to the main road, but the adjacent plots have become fields.
