The arch follows the Oude Schelde, barely 200 m further on your right. The Oude Schelde is 6 km long and covers a 115 ha area with a rich fauna and flora.
Originally, the Scheldt followed this stream channel to the confluence with the Durme in Temse. However, after a flood in 1240, she made her way a more westerly path.
The Nieuwe Schelde became wider, while the Oude Scheldearm lost strength. Eventually, both ends silted up and an abandoned arm emerged, which is now a paradise for fishermen, who have planted dozens of fishing huts there.
