During the battle of 14 June 1746 between the armies allied with Austria and the French cavalry, an English soldier was severely wounded on the Drieboomkesberg. He fell prey to wound fever. In dire need, he promised to build a chapel for the Blessed Virgin Mary if he survived. His plea was heard and the chapel was finished in 1750. On November 9, 1800, the chapel was destroyed by a hurricane. The accompanying statue of Mary then hung on a larch for quite some time until, after a number of miraculous healings, it was transferred to the church of Westmalle in 1891. However, it was lost there during the fire of June 8, 1915. In 1954 a new statue was placed for the last time on the Drieboomkesberg, already the fifth in line.
