Zwartven is one of the ponds that formed about ten thousand years ago due to sand erosion after the last ice age. The pits gradually filled with rainwater, which, however, contains no nutrients, causing the ponds to become acidic. The plants that occur there are adapted to that natural environment, but remain extremely fragile.
