On November 30, 1870, the Malines-Terneuzen line was inaugurated. In reality, the construction of this line is largely attributed to Gustave Eiffel, the father of the Eiffel Tower. He indeed designed the completely iron bridge that spans the Escaut River at Tamise, along the route of the railway line. For some time now, cyclists and walkers have been able to enjoy the path laid out along the railway. It passes through beautiful nature, of which the Stropersbos (thief's wood) is the highlight. This forest of nearly 500 hectares owes its name to the nocturnal activities that took place there near the border and was part of the Koningsforeest (king's forest), where the Counts of Flanders used to hunt.
