At the site of the current Market, several important connecting roads converged centuries ago. It is this that gives Deinze its historical significance. The oldest written mention of the town (Donsa) dates from around 840. In 880, the Vikings found Deinze and thoroughly destroyed it. Some remnants in the crosswalks of the Our Lady's Church still remind us of its Romanesque origin. The construction of the current church, in Schelde Gothic style, began in the 14th century. Its main art treasures include a painting from the studio of Gaspar De Crayer, an organ from 1740, and twelve linden wood apostle statues. An interesting fact is that the world's first grand carillon was installed in the tower in 1988. There are now 48 bells hanging there.
