The Ieper-IJzer canal (also known as the Ieperlee canal) connects Ypres with Diksmuide and the sea via Nieuwpoort. Once, the canal was an important traffic artery, but now it is mainly of interest for recreational boating. During World War I, the canal was part of the Ypres Salient, the defensive belt against the German troops.
