The beautiful collection of buildings on the Zoutleeuwse Grote Markt testifies to the rich past of the city. The late Gothic town hall impresses, along with the former cloth hall next to it. The designer of the 16th-century town hall was a member of the Keldermans family, a Mechelen master builder dynasty that even worked as far away as the Netherlands. Zoutleeuw received his building permit for the cloth hall on New Year's Day 1316 from Duke John III, who was visiting there at the time. On the façade of the building you can see the statues of Saint Leonard and Saint Blaise, respectively the patron saints of the city and of the weavers.
