The Hageland is roughly situated between the cities of Leuven, Tienen, Zoutleeuw, Diest and Aarschot. The oldest mention of the term Hageland is said to date from 1528. The word would mean nothing but "forest land." And there is no shortage of that here. In addition to the numerous larger and smaller forests, you will certainly also enjoy the many fruit trees along the route. Low-stemmed apples and pear trees are almost equally important here. Occasionally you will also notice some authentic standard orchards. The hills are usually no higher than eighty or ninety meters: height differences of more than thirty meters cannot be overcome on this route. It is nice to know that the hills are in fact petrified sandbanks, which remained after the Diestiaan Sea withdrew from present-day Flanders seven million years ago.
