Aspelare

Description

Since the merger of 1977, Aspelare is a part of Ninove. The village is located in sandy Flanders, in an undulating landscape between the Scheldt and the Dender.

Monuments
The Sint-Amanduskerk is a 15th-century late Gothic hall church, with built-in west tower and without transept. During the renovation works in 1776-78, the aisles were widened and the entire nave brought under one roof; The interior mainly dates from the same period. The church and the cemetery around it - with tombstones from the 16th to the 18th centuries - have been a protected monument and protected landscape since 1977. The current cemetery is a few hundred meters away.

History
Aspelare is first mentioned in 1118 as 'Hasplar' and in 1142 as 'Asplar'. The name can easily be explained as the composition of the tree name 'aspen' and the Germanic 'hlaêri', which means 'swampy wooded terrain'.

The local lordship was originally in the hands of a family that bore its name and is believed to have had a castle here in the 12th and 13th centuries. John of Aspelare (Johannis de Asplar), appears in a charter of the Ninoof Abbey as early as 1160, and Henry of Aspelare (Henricus de Hasplar) in 1200 in a similar document. But still in the 13th century Aspelare was included together with Nederhasselt in the Barony of Boelare, with the baron himself as village lord. Both villages would then form one quadrilateral.

Aspelare and Nederhasselt remained part of the barony until 1784, when the then Baron of Boelare, Charles-François de Cassina, removed both villages from his domain and sold them for 11,000 guilders to Louis-Joseph de Coninck, knight of the Holy Roman Empire, lord of Cambeke, Outer, Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, Zwijveke and Denderbelle, in whose family it remained until the French revolution.
