About six hundred years ago, a battle raged in Ten Nelleken between the People of Brabant and the Flemish army. The Flemings were not as well armed as their opponents and went to war with helmets without face protection. Not only did the Flemings lose the battle, those who were able to escape often suffered facial injuries. Hence the local saying 'he has also been to Nelleken' to refer to someone's violated face.
