When the French seized power in the southern Netherlands in 1794, they took all kinds of unpopular measures, including
compulsory military service. The population strongly disagreed and dissatisfaction increased. From 1798 this resulted in a revolt, the Boerenkrijg. Two of the main leaders of this uprising were residents of Westerlo. The Boerenkrijg
was short but fierce. After two months, the peasants suffered a final defeat in Hasselt, when on 5 December 1798 the sansculotten surrounded the peasants near the chapel of Hilst. On the forecourt of the Abbey of Tongerlo is the so-called Boerenkrijgschuur, a tithe barn from 1618. She got that name because the farmers (brigands) would have met here in secret.
