When the French seized power in the southern Netherlands in 1794, they implemented various unpopular measures, including mandatory military service. The population was absolutely opposed to this, and discontent increased. This resulted in an uprising starting in 1798, the Peasants' War. Two of the main leaders of this uprising were residents of Westerlo. The Peasants' War
was short but intense. After two months, the peasants suffered a definitive defeat in Hasselt, when on December 5, 1798, the sans-culottes surrounded the peasants near the chapel of Hilst. In the forecourt of the abbey of Tongerlo stands the so-called Peasants' War barn, a tithe barn from 1618. It got its name because the peasants (brigands) are said to have met here in secret.
