Until 1917 a ferry operated here. The Ostend-Bruges canal used to be called the Yperleet, a remnant of the salt marsh and mud flats area after the Dunkirk Transgression. The Yperleet was canalized in the 17th century and remained a constant point of contention between the cities of Ypres and Bruges.
Nieuwege is also a hamlet. Ships used to moor here as well. Many farm inns stood here at the water's edge. Before we reach the bridge, there are two more such ex-inns. The southernmost was called the St. Antheunishoeve and the other the St. Clarahoeve. Of these skipper's inns, one remained open, on the other side of the bridge. It's a cozy gourmet café.
